A Proper Camp Breakfast with GSI Outdoors

GSI Pinnacle griddle
GSI Pinnacle griddle

“Hickory-smoked bacon sizzles on a griddle. The fat pools, spreads, and infuses eggs scrambling in butter nearby.
Did your salivary glands just twitch? Of course they did. To do bacon and eggs—and many other proper camping dishes—correctly it’s nice to have a griddle.…

We recently tried the Pinnacle Griddle from GSI Outdoors.

It’s aluminum and just a bit over two pounds, yet offers a generous 10 by 18-inch cooking area surrounded by a grease moat. The surface is some non-stick space-age stuff—which we eschew at home but which is nice for cleaning up with a limited water supply. The back is hard-anodized (GSI offers a non-anodized version called the Bugaboo).

The grease moat keeps excess grease off the main cooking area.

The Pinnacle Griddle’s aluminum is fairly thin, which means low heat will suffice, but not so thin that there were hotspots—it heated and cooked evenly for both bacon and pancakes.

2013 Spring Camping Gear Review Roundup: GSI Outdoors

“OK, all you folks out there with cabin fever, it’s time to gear up, and get out into the wilderness and enjoy all the upcoming beautiful spring weather!

521615_438948616192406_1894110114_n

GSI Outdoors makes a wide variety of really cool camping cookware gear.

Amongst them are the Pinnacle Soloist cook set and the ultra-light teakettle.
The Soloist can hold 14 fl. oz., weighs in at 10.9 oz., and has the following dimensions: 5.00″ x 5.40″ x 5.50″.

Made with a rubber coated folding handle and a non-stick Teflon coating, it also comes with a vented plastic lid/strainer, insulated plastic bowl, collapsible plastic Spork, and a carrying pouch that doubles as a sink. Even though I would have preferred that the lid and bowl be made of metal and not plastic, they both seem quite sturdy.

The teakettle can hold 1 qt., weighs only 5.8 oz, and is 6.30″ x 6.00″ x 3.20″ in size. Both the teakettle handle and the lid handle are rubber coated. If you want a teakettle for camping, this is the one to get.

Both of these cookware items seem to me to be well-made, lightweight, and durable. If you need camping cook gear that just works whether it is used for tailgate camping or backpacking, you should consider checking out GSI Outdoors.”

Rambling Review: GSI Outdoors Halulite MicroDualist

ArizonaWanderings-424x200 From Arizona Wanderings a Rambling Review of the GSI Outdoors Halulite MicroDualist…

“Everyone is looking for that all in one cooking setup that is lightweight and packable. My wife and I often backpack together and so some of the smaller solo systems do not fit our needs. We have been using the GSI Outdoors Halulite MicroDualist for the past couple of months and have been really impressed with the functionality of the whole system.

GSI-Outdoors-Halulite-MicroDualist-1

All the pieces– The GSI Outdoors Halulite MicroDualist is comprised of multiple pieces of cook and dinnerware.

–       One 1.4 L Pot with a strainer lid

–       Two 14 fl. oz. insulated mugs,

–       Two 14 fl. oz. bowls

–       Two Sip Tops for the insulated mugs

–       Two Telescoping Foons

–       A Stove Bag,

–       Welded sink which is also the carrying bag

The whole Halulite Microdualist system weighs around 18 ounces making it a lightweight option for a backpacking trip.

Field Use:
I packed the GSI Outdoors Halulite MicroDualist on several long dayhikes in order to heat up lunch, coffee and tea. The MicroDualist also made the journey into the Grand Canyon where it served as our entire cook kitchen. At almost six inches tall and only 18 oz. the GSI Microdualist is perfect for a a day trip where you need a hot lunch but also excels on a multiday trip into the backcountry.

Breaking everything down, here are some of the highlights from the GSI Outdoors Halulite MicroDualist. The main cooking pot is the perfect size for two people. When boiling water for Ramen, coffee, or a couple of Mountainhouse meals, the 1.4 Liter Halulite cooking pot does the trick and allows you to boil enough for two people at the same time. With a folding rubber-coated handle and a strainer lid, GSI Outdoors seems to have thought of everything. The pot itself is made from Halulite, a proprietary alloy that also conducts heat better.” I’ve banged and dropped this pot more times than I would like to admit and it looks as good as new.

GSI-Outdoors-Halulite-MicroDualist-3

When I first opened up the Halulite Microdualist I was confused because I only saw two plastic container/cup/bowls. GSI strategically made two of the plastic bowls a bit smaller so the fit snugly together and save a ton of room.  Two of the cup/bowls have a nice insulating sleeve complete with a Sip-It top for a hot beverage or soup. The plastic containers are made out of GSI Outdoor’s Infinity plastic which claims to not absorb food odors the way that other plastics do.

GSI-Outdoors-Halulite-MicroDualist-6

Prognosis:  The GSI Outdoor Halulite MicroDualist cookset is a great option for two or more campers/backpackers. It provides functionality and durability while on the trail.”

THE BEST DUTCH OVENS: GSI 12-INCH HARD ANODIZED DUTCH OVEN

Q: WHAT ARE THE BEST DUTCH OVENS FOR CAMP COOKING?

I want to go beyond normal camp food for my next trip. I’m talking cobbler, cornbread, even pizza. What should I do?

dutch-oven-main_fe

A: The GSI 12-Inch Dutch Oven

The humble Dutch oven isn’t something you would pack for a speed hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, but these heavy, thick-walled pots have long represented the easiest and most pleasurable means of making gourmet food in the outdoors. Dutch ovens distribute heat evenly so you are less likely to burn chili or spaghetti sauce, and they churn out perfect cornbread, cobblers, crisps, stews, and meat every time.

While the original Dutch ovens date back three centuries to the Netherlands, the pots have seen significant upgrades in the past few years. Most cast-iron varieties now arrive from the factory pre-seasoned, making maintenance less of a hassle. Aluminum versions use a manufacturing method to hard-anodize the walls, making seasoning unnecessary. All Dutch ovens are relatively heavy, though, and more appropriate to sites within a mile from the trailhead (and even then, we recommend slipping them into the pack of the least-popular member of your group).

GSI 12-Inch Hard Anodized Dutch Oven.

There are benefits to GSI’s non-reactive aluminum Dutch ovens. They never rust, don’t need seasoning, and are relatively lightweight (this version weighs less than a gallon of water). The 12-inch, equivalent to a ive-quart, bears a hard-anodized coating that makes it non-stick out of the box and lets it withstand the hottest campfires. If you’re looking to create a multi-course feast at the campsite, like a main course and a dessert, the 12-inch neatly holds the 10-inch version inside.

GSI Outdoors- Crossover Kitchen Kit

gsi-kitchen-kit

By Erika D.

My boyfriend is a great cook, but not the best packer. So our car camping and road trips tend to involve lugging along a tote filled with cooking utensils, dish soap, and the salt and pepper shakers grabbed from our kitchen counter as we run out to the car. Now that we’ve discovered the GSI Outdoors Crossover Kitchen Kit, we’re packing very small.

This compact cooking kit is the size of a waist pack, so it’s easy stash in a backpack or bag. It also has small D-rings on each side so it can be attached to the outside of a pack. Inside the main compartment, there’s a spatula, a serving spoon (with measuring lines for tablespoons and ounces), and tongs, as well as a small cutting board. All of the utensils have pivoted handles that can be closed when not in use and extended and locked into place when I need them. My boyfriend doesn’t really care that much about gear, but he was impressed with the generous sizes and sturdiness of the GSI Outdoors Crossover Kitchen Kit’s utensils. The fact that he uses this kit means he finds it useful.

The GSI Outdoors Crossover Kitchen Kit also has a spatula head (with a soft and a hard side) tucked into a sleeve in the main compartment. It’s about the same size as the one I use at home, but packs easily since it doesn’t have a handle. The cutting board is rigid without being too thick. I like that. There are also three small containers in the main compartment of the GSI Outdoors Crossover Kitchen Kit that are held in place against the inside of the bag with wide elastic straps. We use the tiny bottle for dish soap (of course, biodegradable) and the medium-sized bottle for olive oil. The third bottle is really two small bottles that are screwed together that we use for salt and pepper, or, salt and basil. Once I unscrew them and remove their lids, I have the option of using the inner lids to pour or sprinkle my spices. Very nice.

The lid of the bag as a Velcr0-like sealed pouch that holds a scrubby for washing pans and a Sham-Wow-style dish towel. The lid has mesh along the edges so once we use the items and repack them, they get some air to dry.

It’s so nice to have a mini kitchen set wherever we go. Even when I insist on staying in hotels, we bring the portable camp stove and cook our dinners in  hotel parking lots (we’ve even made dinner on a balcony of a fancy hotel!).

I have to say that I have been won over by this handy little kit. I’m a terrible packer, but I actually enjoy using the GSI Outdoors Crossover Kitchen Kit. Now, it’s my job to  fill up the bottles the night before trips and make sure the kit gets packed in my purse or backpack.

GSI Outdoors Pinnacle Camper Cookware Set

Review from Outdoorhub.com
by Andy and Tami McDaniels on November 22, 2012

One of the things I like about spending time in the outdoors is being able to try out new recipes on the camp stove. Enjoying a tasty meal at the end of a long day of hiking, canoeing, hunting or any other outdoor adventure is the icing on the cake.

PC-1-590x344

The Pinnacle Camper by GSI Outdoors provided all the tableware and cookware I needed to make and enjoy a fabulous meal in the outdoors, and I didn’t even have to think about what to pack. The set includes a three-liter pot, a two-liter pot, two strainer lids, a nine-inch fry pan, four 14 fl. oz. insulated mugs, four 14 fl. oz. bowls, four 7.5” plates, four sip-it tops, a folding pot gripper, and a welded sink that doubles as the stuff sack.

In addition to being a complete and compact set, I found that the cookware was really easy to use. The handy folding pot gripper locked into place easily and proved to be a sturdy handle for cooking. The food I prepared cooked quickly and evenly. The non-stick surface made easy work of frying, but it also made the clean-up a cinch. After the items were cleaned, I found it was quite simple to reassemble the pieces into their original nesting positions.

This set is designed for four-person car camping, but can be reconfigured for two-person backpacking.
PC-2

Quality

The Pinnacle Camper is compact, durable and easy to use. The cookware is coated with a non-stick coating using an advanced technology that enables it to reach higher temperatures faster. This is a very important feature to me. Faster cooking means less energy is used which in turn means a fuel savings can occur. The surface of the cookware is treated with a hard anodized aluminum to ensure even-heating and durability. The tableware is ultra-light, stain-resistant and–what I really like most–odor resistant. In addition, the insulated mugs are buoyant.

If you look at other reviews about this product, you might read some that include negative remarks about the lids, stating that they melt. However, the Pinnacle Camper has been recently updated with NEW lids. The lid material is now high-temperature Nylon 66. The rims are now protected with silicone rings on the lids. This prevents edge melting from the high flames and keeps plastic from contacting a hot pot rim. The Pinnacle Camper I reviewed came with the updated lids. I did not encounter any problems with them.

Reliability

The Teflon with Radiance technology and quality of construction lead me to believe this product will provide years of excellent service. I think if problems are encountered it will be due to human error, like cooking at extreme temperatures or allowing a pan to boil dry.

Price/Value

Having purchased a lot of cookware, I was amazed at the retail price of only $129.95. The fact that you get so many pieces makes it a great value for the money.

Referability

The Pinnacle Camper is compact, affordable, and easy to use. I recommend this product to all backpackers and campers who do not want to put effort into packing, but who do want to enjoy a good meal.
