Whispbar Fork Mount

In Utah last month more than 1,000 brands and tens of thousands of attendees gathered for the twice-annual Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City. GearJunkie editors and reporters met with a large percentage of the represented brands to seek out “Best in Show” products, the most innovative and unique items put out by the industry this year. Take a look below. We’ve crowned these products, most of which will hit shelves in 2013, as winners for part I of our “Best in Show” coverage. Congrats to the brands and the designers behind this great new gear!

Rack Art — Whispbar, a new line from Yakima, offers high-end aerodynamic rack bars

and mounts that seem to scream the words “premium and sleek.” From the Whispbar

line, which includes multiple products ranging from crossbars to ski racks, a bike

mount, the WB200, stood out.

The fork mount connects to a Whispbar rack bar in seconds via adapters that cam into

a T-slot on the bar. Its tray is a solid swoop of aluminum, and the front adapter is so

refined it looks like sculpture art. A bonus, this bike mount works with standard 9mm

forks as well as 15mm through-axle forks without adapters. A premium car-top

accessory but with a premium price tag, too. $249.

Garmont expands their reach at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2012

On its own, Garmont is a solid company. Trail shoes, trekking boots, ski touring boots and mountaineering footwear are all products that Garmont has been offering for many years. Now they’ve expanded their reach by adding three new brands to their arsenal: Movement Skis, Life-Link Backcountry gear and Bridgedale Socks. With the addition of these three labels, Garmont has opened themselves up to new demographics, and of course, added some stellar new gear.

First and foremost, Garmont makes a range of footwear for active lifestyles. The company originated over in Northern Italy, and for 140 years they have produced high quality boots and shoes. Many of their classics have been updated, but they’ve also added some interesting new items. The Claw is a low profile hiking shoe with excellent stability. A day hiker that goes from road to trail with ease, the Claw comes in both vented and Gore-Tex versions. If you’re in the market for a light multi-day boot, the Storm GTX fits the bill. It’s stable enough to carry light backpacking loads, but light and comfortable enough to use as a day-trekker. If you need a bad-ass boot that will hold up to heavy loads and nasty conditions, then the Colorado is what you seek; aggressive lugs, leather uppers and heavy-duty hardware make this the ideal boot for big time mountain outings. All the new boots and shoes will be available in Spring 2013.

Life-Link Backcountry Travel gear is now under the Garmont umbrella, and they had a few items on display. Shovels, probes, poles and snow study kits will all stay under the Life-Link brand while undergoing updates. We’ll get to see more of their products at this year’s Winter Market. Bridgedale has also been welcomed into the fold. This company has been churning out socks from their base in Northern Ireland since World War I, so yeah, they’ve got some history backing their product. A full line of light hikers, trekkers and running booties is now a part of the Garmont family. Finally, since Garmont makes some pretty slick touring boots, they figured why not add a ski brand as well? This freeski company has been around since 1999, and again, we’ll know plenty more about them once Winter OR rolls around.

It may sound like Garmont has their hands full with three new brands, because they certainly do. It will be a juggling act to grow the newcomers while maintaing their high level of footwear products. However, from what I saw in their booth at Outdoor Retailer, they sure seem capable of pulling it off. This was a group of friendly people who clearly had a passion for their products, and any good juggler will tell you that is often all you need.

Kids are now heading back to school. Although we are still getting to experience some late summer sunshine, we are know a wet Pacific Northwest fall is just around the corner. Here is a great project that is fun and can help protect those textbooks from the impending precipitation.

USA Pro Challenge

Christian Vande Velde and the Garmin Sharp Barracuda Team Dominate the 2012 USA Pro Challenge

With a time of 17:35 and just 10 seconds behind the stage winner Taylor Phinney, Christian Vande Velde won the 2012 USA Pro Challenge. “I’ve finished as the bridesmaid so many times, I wasn’t going to let one slip away this time,” said Vande Velde.

Tyler Farrar, after winning the fifth stage, took home the green jersey and Tommy Danielson was awarded the jersey of the most aggressive rider.

If Tommy D had been asked what the key thing that allowed him to be able to survive the attacking peloton and stay in front for the solo win we are confident his answer would have been simple: the Podium bottle with its Jet Valve.

From Team Garmin Sharp Baracuda:

Simply put, CamelBak is the originator and world leader in hands-free hydration systems. Their roots are with mountain bikers and motocross, and then they quickly grew from there. CamelBak now makes products for almost any active sport you can think of, in addition to a major market with the armed forces. CamelBak is another of our sponsors with great concern for sustainable business practices and with that in mind only use plastics of the highest qualities.

CamelBak’s Podium Bottle is our go-to source of fluid on the road. On hot days, or cold, we take advantage of the Podium Chill bottles to keep our drinks the temperatures we start with. In time trials we have RaceBaks for easy, hands free hydration, and afterwards we always have a BetterBottle Eddy bottle around for hydration off the bike.

CamelBak Arc 4 Run Belt

OUTDOOR RETAILER: NEW HYDRATION GEAR

Your body is 98 percent water. Keep your cells happy and hydrated with these new water-replenishing packs for cyclists and runners that debuted at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City.

Water is heavy—so this hydration belt spreads the load. Four holsters each hold an eight ounce Podium Arc Bottle, a mini Camelbak Podium bottle with the same sweet high-flow mouthpiece we love in the standard size Podium bottle. Mini Podiums are shaped to fit your grip, and they slide easily into the belt bottle cages so you can hydrate on the move.

The belt holds a total of 32 ounces of water or your beverage of choice, and about 20 cubic inches of whatever else you need to bring along, like bars, keys and a cell phone. The best part: total belt weight is just 2.5 ounces—not including bottles. Will be available starting January 2013 in three sizes with Velcro and elastic webbing closure; $60; camelbak.com.
