Footwear Cleaning Gel vs. Sandal Wash – Throw-down!
By Kelsey, The Nikwax Nerd
Nikwax’s Footwear Cleaning Gel and Sandal Wash are alike in one very important way. Both are extremely versatile cleaners for a wide variety of footwear constructions. From full-grain leather to plastic or rubber combination constructions, both of these products will remove the gunk that is making your footwear look haggard and keeping it from performing the way it was designed to perform. And both cleaners are used/applied the same way… lots of water and a little elbow grease. Get the footwear item wet, push down on the center of the sponge scrubber on either product to break the seal, then scrub away. Rinse away the suds and allow to air dry.
Now, while these two brothers-from-another-mother chose to major in the same thing in college (footwear cleaning), they went on to different specialty careers. Sandal Wash contains the same plant-based odor remover found in Nikwax Basewash and Wool Wash. This odor remover is called geraniol and will remove even the most persistent funk in sports sandals like Keens, Tevas, Chacos, etc. Though, as stated above, it can be used on ANY sandals – leather, fabric, rubber, etc. It is also effective on neoprene, such as is found on the feet of waders or surf and dive boots.
Footwear Cleaning Gel, on the other hand, focuses on micro-grits – tiny particles of dirt, dust, sand and other little grimys that work their way into your shoes or boots when you’re out on the road or trail. These small particles are often sharp and can begin tearing up leather, fabric and waterproof breathable membranes from the inside out. Additionally, these particles can draw water into footwear. Both of these issues contribute to premature cracking, drying and membrane failure. Footwear Cleaning Gel is a highly trained micro-grit seeking ninja, which finds these micro-grits, surrounds them and whisks them away into the night – never to be heard from again.
So! Use Sandal Wash to keep those sandals in tip top shape – and maybe someone will be willing to share a tent with you on your next backpacking trip. Making Footwear Cleaning Gel part of your post-trail ritual will keep your boots and shoes performing their best and will make them last a LOT longer (you’ll probably get sick of them before they wear out).
And for your dealers, carrying both Footwear Cleaning Gel and Sandal Wash assures that they need not take a hit to their footwear add-on numbers during the summer months. Additionally, Sandal Wash presents a unique opportunity for add-ons in the surf, dive and fishing categories (again, great on neoprene!). Just one more way you can help your dealers improve their dollars and items per transaction and by extension, the good ‘ole bottom line.
KABOOM! Feel smarter yet? I know I do. 🙂
